Exercise

Why is Exercise so Important for Women with
Breast Cancer?
(Fall 2006)
Many research studies have shown that moderate intensity
physical activity during and after treatment for breast cancer
decreases nausea, fatigue and stress, increases quality of life
and mood and decreases the risk of breast cancer recurrence by
up to 50%!
How often should I exercise?
Exercising 30 minutes 3-4 times per week is enough to gain the
benefits!
I want to do it, but how can I stick to a regular program?
-
Choose
something you enjoy!
-
Plan to
exercise at the same time each day, or actually schedule
exercise time.
-
Plan
your exercise times a week in advance so that it takes a top
priority, not fit in when everything else is completed.
-
Exercise
with a friend or family member.
-
Choose
an exercise that takes minimal planning, such as walking in
your neighborhood.
-
On days
where you don’t feel like exercising, convince yourself to
do just 5 minutes– often once you get going you will finish
your regular routine!
-
Remember
the decreased risk of breast cancer recurrence with regular
exercise – do it for your loved ones.
-

exercise advice – TurningPoint physical therapists can work
with you to develop an exercise plan that includes aerobic,
strengthening and flexibility components.
Occasional check-ups on your program can help you progress, set
new goals and be
accountable!
